This July I start my goal of sending 2400 text messages in a month, I really don’t know how I am going to do that but I will try. So as you may have noticed I have not been posting much, I have been kinda busy but I will not quit blogging!

Now I plan on writing my article on Yahoo! Tools this weekend so keep an eye out for that. By the way thank you everyone for wishing me a happy brithday. It was an awesome day! I got more things I will share with everyone soon!

Software Review: Panda Cloud Antivirus 1.1 BETA! May 29, 2010

A few posts ago I talked about how I was a Panda Cloud Forum Trusted MOD, for today’s post I am going to post a review of the product I help with. The current stable version of Panda Cloud Antivirus is v1.0.1 but I am going to go review the latest beta version 1.1.

The major difference between 1.1 and 1.0.1 is the new behavior blocker, behavior analysis engine, self protection module, exclude list, and many other minor bug fixes. Normally I stay away from betas and wait for the final version to be released but since I have been running this beta I have not found 1 bug that needs to be fixed. Now all AV programs are different so make sure you have a back up if you think about trying this.

Now the most common question when I share Panda Cloud AV to people is that they fear Panda Cloud is sending personal files to the PCAV CI servers so Panda can spy on them. This is no way true Panda only sends PE files to the PCAV servers (.exe, .dll, .reg) and does not send (.PDF, .doc) so none of your personal files are sent to the PCAV servers. Also most of the time just file hashes are sent to the server not full files. Another good part of the cloud is that without all the files being scanned on your PC it does not use as much memory as many other AV products. With all the AV’s I have tested Panda has had the least slow down on my machine.

For detection rates Panda is near the top, with detection rates up high and the behavior blockers guarding your PC you will be very protected.

10/10 stars

Software Review: Malwarebytes May 28, 2010

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware also known as MBAM is a tool designed to detect what your AV misses. I can share from personal experience that MBAM does that very well, for it has detected a bit of malware that was left over from a previous infection.

MBAM is great at picking up malware leftovers, on the two machines I have installed it on it detected 3 registry keys from left over malware infections that the AV we use missed. So it is great at detecting stuff. I personally run the PRO version with automatic updates and real time protection but the free version is good for everyone’s PC Tuneup Toolbox.

MBAM  is normally a very stable product, once or twice I have issues with it loading on boot but that is most likely due to the amount of memory I have, I am recommending MBAM to everyone who needs help with PC issues

10/10 Stars

Software Review: Winpatrol May 27, 2010

Today is going to be the first of a few software reviews. The lucky first program to be reviewed is Winpatrol.  http://www.winpatrol.com/ by BillP Studios is a small yet powerful system watcher. Winpatrol patrols your Windows Startup programs, scheduled tasks, ActiveX controls, IE helpers, services, active tasks, and has many other nice tools tha come in handy.

Winpatrol comes in two versions Winpatrol FREE and Winpatrol PLUS. The major difference in the current version in real time checking and polling. The free version of Winpatrol uses polling and checks you PC every x mins. The Pro version using real time checking and can alert you when PC changes happen as soon as they happen. The PLUS version also contains in online database of files you can check what files are and if they are needed at startup.

Winpatrol is very effective, it is silent when nothing is happening and barks with changes happen. I can tell Winpatrol is very silent till I make changes to my PC. A few times Adobe has updated in the background without alerting me and Winpatrol started barking alerting me that changes were being made and asked if I wanted to deny the changes. You may be wondering why I say Winpatrol barks, the Winpatrol Tray Icon is a small dog when it detects changes the Winpatrol alert also plays a barking sound.

Winpatrol PLUS cost 29.95 (I got it for $0.99 at the one time only sale) and since I bought it I will say its 100% worth it. I will give it a 10/10 for being a great value and a great tool.

Some of you may know this but some of you may now so I will just make sure everyone knows everything first. It may spare time I play around with computer security products, so I tried Panda Cloud AV and liked it so I stayed on the PCAV (Panda Cloud Antivirus) forums and helped people on the site with questions so after a few months I got promoted to Power Mod (Actually the term changed a few times I went from helper to expert to mod, to power user, to Power Mod, and now today they picked the final name; Trusted Mod) so I have been helping out around there.

So now some of you are wondering “What do I do as Trusted Mod”? So I will explain part of what I do. Most of the time is spent answering users questions, I don’t keep track of how many I answer a day but all 5 of the Trusted Mods answer some questions daily. We also write guides for users, plus we get to discuss with the Panda staff idea’s for the software. Actually one of my idea’s for the software was added to the next version of the software (v1.1) but I can not share with you till it has been released. We also have the right to send in a idea for a blog post and if it gets approved it gets posted on the Panda labs blog. I have not sent in any ideas yet but if I get posted on the site I will share a link to it on here.

So that’s one way I spend my free time!

Pac-Man cost $120M…… May 25, 2010

I did not add this in my Pac-Man blog post because I did not think it would be that bad but the latest news I have read is kinda surprising. In the article I read it says est. $120 million of productivity was lost due to the Google Pac-man! 120 million is a lot of money and I don’t really think it was that much, though it goes to show classic games still are very popular.

So what do you think? Would you say the est. was higher or lower then how much actual productivity was lost?

Tomorrow is the 30 anniversary of the creation of the video game Pac-Man. Many of you have most likely been to Google today and saw that the Pac-Man doodle for the Google logo is playable. I have made it to level 3 of 255 so if like me you still have not made it to the end of the game you got less then 48 hours to finish it.

Hint: If you want you can play 2 player mode on the Google Home Page. Click insert coin twice and you will get MS.  pac-man and pac-man.To control Ms. pac-man use the W,A,S, and D key.

Here are some other facts about Pac-Man you may have never known:

The American names for all the Pac-Man ghosts are: Red Guy, Pink Guy, Blue Guy, Slow Guy.

You can only play Pac-Man to level 255 because on level 256 a code bug appears preventing you from going on.

Be different! May 18, 2010

Different, according to Wikitionary it is defined as “not the same, unlike others.” Now being different is sometimes a good thing, well the different I am talking about is. Now over the past few weeks I have been told I was different many times. The few times I have been told I was different this week was when I shared “I have never been to an amusement park” and when I shared “I have no plans on getting married at all” So for today’s post I want to challenge you to be different.

So first let me describe different, different is the opposite of what you would call your normal. Normal teens are what most adults think “teens” are. That is part of what the Rebelution is about, its about rising above what people call a normal teen.

Now I would like to share a verse about being different. Sometimes people think it is odd when teens have friends that are older then them. The Bible says that it is a good thing that we have friends that are older then us

Proverbs 13:20 (New International Version)

20 He who walks with the wise grows wise,
but a companion of fools suffers harm.

Now to finish this post I would to encourage you to be different, it may be hard at times, you may be fun of but it is worth it to be uncommon for Christ.

KHOBE: Are you at risk? May 15, 2010

Now just so you know before you start reading this post is about computer security. If you find computer security boring you probably may want to ignore this post.

KHOBE also knowing as Kernel Hooking Bypassing Engine has been in the news many times recently. Although many of the news titles say this is a bypass of all AV’s and you are highly at risk you may want to know it’s not as bad as you think. KHOBE is the result of a bug that was found in 1996 and till today not one virus tried to attack it, so basically KHOBE has been known for a while and no one cared that it was out there.  Yes a virus could possibly attack this vulnerability but it does not instantly bypass all AV products. Like all malware this attack follows the “it most execute to infect” pattern. So you AV is not worthless in this attack, it can still block it like all other malware.

So now just to recap what I already said:

  • Your Antivirus can still protect you as long as you keep it updated
  • This bug has been known for a while and nothing has attacked it, no one worried then so no one should worry now
  • Programs that do not use SSDT hooks are not affected. Some vendors that have been using SSDT hooks are planning on removing them from future version.
  • Most vendors that have this issue are already working on a fix.
